Saint Lucia

General Geography

The geological formation of Saint Lucia is similar to the rest of the Caribbean islands, that is of volcanic origin and traversed from north to south by a forested mountain range that culminates in Morne Gimie (959 meters over the sea level). It is located in Windward Islands, in the small West Indies, south to Martinique and north to Saint Vincent. Saint Lucia has a tropical climate, with an average annual temperature of 26 º C. The average annual rainfall ranges from 1.500 mm on the cost to more than 2.500 mm in the mountains. The rainy season lasts from May to August but it is moderate due to the influence of the sea..


Geographical Extension

Saint Lucia is an island located in the Caribbean, between Saint Vincent and the French island of Martinique. It has an area of 616 square kilometers. The country is of volcanic origin, and is traversed from north to south by a forested mountain range that culminates in Morne Gimie, the highest point (958 meters over the sea level).


Geographical Division

The capital and largest city of the country is Castries, with a population of 52.900 inhabitants (according to an information obtained in 1999). Castries is also the main port of the country.

Rivers

In the south is Soufrière volcanic crater with hot sulfur springs which offers a potential source of geothermal energy. The mountains contain many streams and fertile valleys. Among the most important rivers of the country are: Roseau, Cul de Sac, and Canelles. The rainfalls are abundant in the mountains, which are covered by forests.


National Flora

The flora is mainly of tropical origin. It has more than one thousand flower plants.Similar to the rest of the Caribbean islands, Saint Lucia has a volcanic geological formation. It has many dense forested mountains traversed from north to south with many streams and fertile valleys.


National Animal

The fauna of Saint Lucia, as in the rest of the Caribbean islands, is tropical in origin. There are about 150 different species of birds. Its waters also have a great variety of marine species, which are among the huge coral reefs. They have uncommon shapes and colors as the jellyfish, sperm whales, and whales in certain areas of warm waters, turtles, hawkbill turtles, sea urchins, and a huge amount of fish of different sizes. Due to the fact that Saint Lucia is a small island, the mammal production is scarce.
