Its territory is mainly formed by plains. At Southwest, there is a rugged region which posses elevations of 365 meters. At the coast, which is irregular, there are several natural ports, especially Willemstad port(population: 125 000 inhab., according to estimations made in 1985), which is the capital and biggest city.Its annual temperature has an average of about 27 °C.
Curaçao is 64 km long, it´s almost 16 km wide and it has a surface of 44 km2.
There are mangroves close to the sea which grow up in dense groups, these are the habitat of a wide variety of birds and fishes. They can be also observe in protected areas, like Christoff, different varieties of white or purple orchids, and wood adapted to the dry weather like the cactus; there is a dozen of wild species, some of them have medicinal, edible or other properties.
Its fauna is wealthy about birds species; there are beautiful colonies of flamingos and birds like Makuaku, which can be seen flying over the beach or ports. Christoffel park is an excellente place to observe many birds who live in the country. There are also some varieties of pigeons.It doesn´t have many species of animals, but there are some like the queen of reptiles in the island: iguana –the country is in the first position in the world due to its succesful breeding in captivity--, several species of frogs and aligators, and goats, donkeys and bugs.
