Pointe-à-Pitre (Grand Terre)

Pointe-à-Pitre is a port and capital of Grand-Terre, a French overseas department in the Caribbean. It takes the island’s other end Guadeloupe is divided into. In the late 18th Century it replaced Basse-Terre as Guadeloupe’s major economic center. The beauty of its environment charms visitors, an old city with a rich history, teeming with shopping malls. As in the case of Basse-Terre, it still preserves its French colonial touch. Its economy is based upon tourism and maritime transportation, as well as on such crops as coffee, cocoa and vanilla.
