Located in the Southwest Caribbean, Grenada is the most southern of the Windward islands.Located to the northeast, Carriacou is the most important from the grenadines group. Grenada is of volcanic origin and pretty mountainous. The highest point is St. Catherine’s Mount (838 m). the valleys that lie between the hills are fertile and picturesque and there are streams and rivers in many of them. It’s the most southern of the Windward islands in the Lesser Antilles.As it is of volcanic origin the Grand Etang and Antoine lakes are on extinct volcanoes craters.It is famous for its spices known as the “Western Isle of Spices”
The country has a surface of 344 square kilometers. The island of Grenada alone has 311 square kilometers.
The grenadines are a group of about 600 islets located in the Caribbean Sea belonging to the Lesser Antilles (Windward Islands)The northern islands are Bequia, Canouan, Mustique, Mayreau, and Union. All of them are part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.Carriacou and Ronde form part of Grenada, located to the South. The islands of Carriacou (34 square kilometers) and Petit Martinique(2 square kilometers), belonging to the Grenadines islands, form part of Grenada.
In the trees inside the island it is possible to find trees such as mahogany and teak some grow over 20 feet and the most outstanding are the chest-nut tree, giant fern the red mahogany and the orchids. .
Among the most representative animals of its fauna there are the turtle, the Caribbean monk seal, the Barbados’s golden warble The Grenada’s bird of prey, the water blackbird of St. Lucia, the imperial parrot, the Grenada’s pigeon, the three colored- parrot and that from St. Vincent.
