Turks and Caicos Islands

General Geography

Yearly mean temperature averages 29,4 °C. In spite of hard-hitting hurricanes, the annual rainfall average hovers 711mm.

Total surface is 430 square kilometers


Geographical Division

The islands make up two groups: the Turks Islands embracing eight inhabited keys, two populated keys (Grand Turk and Salt Cay) plus a great many small and rocky islets. The Caicos Islands, on the other hand, comprises six main islands like Grand Caicos (24,3 square kilometers), the largest of the entire Commonwealth nation, plus several islets.


Coast

The island’s coasts are rugged and comprise in all 430 km.


Rivers

There are no water flows, nor rivers on the island.


Lakes

There are several lakes and ponds, some of them quite large like the ones on Grand Turk that take up a considerable chunk of the surface.


National Flora

Flora is tropical-origin, varied. The chamomile tree stands out.


National Animal

Bonefish is one of the most outstanding marine species, alongside dolphins and jo-jos, some of them over 2 meters long.There are also 36 endemic birds. Some of these birds are pink-color flamingos, pelicans and fishing eagles, as well as a great variety of birds. The country hinges on some natural reserves where all this wildlife can be watched on the loose.
