When Christopher Columbus's flagship, the Santa Maria, ran aground on Haitian reefs in 1492, the crew used its timbers to construct Fort Navidad, the island's earliest European structure. It was later destroyed by Arawak Indians.
Guantanamo is the most Eastern of the Cuban provinces, located 1000 kilometers from the capital of the isle, with a contrasting environment that includes almost deserted areas very near to the exuberant vegetation of the mountains.
