Thousands of Tourists Trapped in Swiss Ski Resort

The Swiss Alpine resort of Zermatt airlifted guests by helicopter on Tuesday after heavy snow and a power cut stranded thousands of visitors.

An estimated 13,000 people were stuck in Zermatt after snow closed mountain lifts, ski runs, walking paths and train services to the village.

With the onset of the wintery weather, avalanche danger in the rugged region of Wallis that includes Zermatt near the Italian border is now rated as "very great", the highest level, according to the Swiss Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research.

Wyndham Hotel Group to Build New Hotel in Miami’s Brickell

Wyndham Hotel Group has announced the signing of the largest hotel development in the trendy Brickell district of Miami to its managed hotel portfolio: a new 445-room, dual-branded hotel leveraging a first-time combination of the Wyndham Grand and TRYP by Wyndham brands.

The hotel is expected to open in late 2019.

The ‘two brands, one destination’ is a new and growing trend, with close to 400 dual-branded hotels open or under construction in the U.S. Kukulski says that number is projected to grow at a rapid pace over the next several years.

CHTA Revs Preps Up for Meeting in Puerto Rico

The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association is encouraging tour operators to attend its Caribbean Marketplace which is being held in January in Puerto Rico as the destination has declared itself officially open for tourism.

In a statement issued by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, the official governing body of the tourism industry, it declares that its over three months since Hurricane Maria and that more than 100 hotels are now in full operation.

Arrivals of U.S. Tourists to Cuba Tripled in 2017

U.S. tourism to Cuba grew nearly threefold in 2017 over the previous year, mainly due to relaxation of travel ban, a Cuban official said Saturday.

Cuba registered a total of 1,173,428 U.S. arrivals last year, a 191-percent increase over 2016, tweeted Josefina Vidal, general director of the United States division of Cuba's Foreign Ministry.

The figure includes both U.S. citizens, whose arrival saw a 217.4-percent increase, and Cubans residing in the United States, which grew 137.8 percent year-over-year.

UK Visitors Drive the Maldives’ Travel Industry

The Maldives has announced an 18.7 percent increase in UK visitor arrivals during November 2017, when compared with the same month in 2016.

In total, 9,579 UK visitors travelled to the Maldives during November 2017, compared with 8,073 in November 2016.

Furthermore, UK visitors represented 7.9 percent of all visitors to the Maldives in November 2017, with a total of 94,258 UK visitors travelling to the Maldives in the first 11 months of 2017, a 1.1 percent year-on-year increase.

LATAM Airlines Peru Starts Lima-Costa Rica Service

LATAM Airlines Peru has inaugurated its non-stop flight between Lima and San José, Costa Rica, serving the Central American country for the first time.

LATAM will operate three weekly flights between the two cities with Airbus A319 aircraft on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

From March, LATAM will operate an additional frequency on Saturday with four weekly flights in total.

Flight LA2408 will depart Lima at 13:05, arriving in San José at 15:55, with a flight time of three hours, 50 minutes.
