Beaches Turks & Caicos to Reopen in December

Beaches Turks & Caicos is set to reopen its doors on the December 14th following an enforced closure following hurricane season in the Caribbean.

The refreshed resort will be bringing with it a range of exciting additions including new restaurants, snack bars and water sports activities.

Situated on the Caribbean’s best and longest stretch of beach as voted by TripAdvisor, Beaches Turks & Caicos has been named the number one resort spot for almost two decades in the prestigious World Travel Awards.

DR’s Riu Republica Adds More Rooms, Water Park

The 1,007-room Riu Republica in Punta Cana, which opened in 2016 on Arena Gorda beach, will debut a 501-room wing and Splash Water World on Nov. 18.

The new wing at the adults-only, all-inclusive resort will include four restaurants, a jerk grill on the beach, three bars, three pools and the water park for guests only. Riu has four other resorts in Punta Cana that feature a water park.

The resort currently offers the Renova Spa, three a la carte restaurants, one buffet restaurant, five bars and a nightclub.

Carnival, RCCL Reschedule Calls to Hurricane-Hit Caribbean Islands

Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International released timetables for their return to storm-damaged islands in the Caribbean.

Carnival said that cruises to San Juan will resume on Nov. 30 and that visits to St. Thomas and St. Maarten are scheduled to resume at the beginning of January. The Nov. 30 call in San Juan will be made by the Carnival Conquest.

St. Thomas can expect a visit from the Carnival Glory on Jan. 9, with a Jan. 15 stop in St. Maarten by the Carnival Sunshine to follow.

Regent Seven Seas to Start Cuba Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises said Cuba will be featured on six itineraries in its 2018-19 Caribbean season. The Seven Seas Mariner, Voyager and Navigator will be doing Cuba calls.

"Three of the six itineraries feature midnight departures from Havana Harbor, so guests have ample time to personally learn about Cuba's authentic nightlife," Regent president Jason Montague said.

Onboard the Seven Seas Mariner, guests can sail to Havana during the ship’s 22-night sailing to Honolulu, beginning October 10, 2018.

Travel Agents in Cancun Upbeat About Mexico

Travel agents and suppliers attending the Cruise Planners annual convention in Cancun last week were upbeat about selling travel to Mexico, despite the spate of bad news that has bedeviled the nation’s tourism industry and triggered client fears.

While the earthquakes that struck Mexico in September were devastating to the country, in the travel industry concerns have focused on reports of tourist blackouts and deaths linked to tainted alcohol, together with a U.S. State Department warning that gang-related violence has spread to popular beach resorts.

Iberostar Cuba Sets Reopening Dates for Damaged Resorts

Iberostar Cuba reports that in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma all the company’s hotels in Havana, Varadero, Trinidad and Santiago de Cuba are once again fully operational, while the chain’s hotels in Los Cayos, the region most severely affected by the storm on the island, will be reopening for business on Nov. 1.

The IBEROSTAR Ensenachos, IBEROSTAR Daiquiri and IBEROSTAR Playa Pilar hotels will be reopening for business on Nov. 1 following a series of improvements to their facilities.

The IBEROSTAR Mojito is set to open on Nov. 15.

Falmouth Poised to Become Model Cruise Port in the Caribbean

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, says the Port of Falmouth in Trelawny is poised to become a model regional cruise shipping destination, noting that this augurs well for Jamaica’s industry to exponentially record additional growth.

Bartlett said, to date, the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) has spent approximately $190 million to undertake projects in town, inclusive of renovation of the Falmouth Court House and the renowned Water Square business district.

Karisma Reveals Details of Punta Cana’s First Margaritaville Resort

Dominican Today is reporting that President Danilo Medina met in the National Palace with Rafael Feliz, the CEO of Karisma Hotels & Resorts, who announced construction of a $300 million resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic next year.

According to the report, Feliz said by the spring of 2018, Karisma Hotels & Resorts will start construction of the Dorado Resort and Sensimar Resort hotels in the Cap Cana resort area, with 250 rooms each.

Norwegian Adds Emission-Reducing Tech to Ships

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that a new Exhaust Gas Cleaning system has been added to Norwegian Sun and Norwegian Jade. The new systems are expected to significantly reduce air emissions and, subsequently, the ships' environmental footprints. The decision was made in part with the line’s Sail & Sustain environmental program. Norwegian plans to extend the system to eight of their ships.

Caribbean Hotel Industry's Profits Fell in 2016

CBRE Hotels Americas Research announced that the average Caribbean hotel in its survey sample suffered a 4.7 percent decrease in gross operating profit (GOP) during 2016, according to its newly released twelfth edition of Caribbean Trends in the Hotel Industry. This decline in profitability follows four consecutive years of double-digit increases in GOP.
